USQ newsroom

The USQ newsroom employs the latest in technology and software to train students in writing and reporting for print and broadcast. The newsroom is equipped with iMac computers, Internet access, a telephone for interviewing, laser printers, a newspaper archive and mini-disc playback machines. The newsroom is used for tutorial sessions and for producing afternoon radio news bulletins and weekly television newscasts.

 

 

Radio studio

State-of-the-art radio studio facilities provide broadcast journalism students with access to digital news recording and editing equipment. Students work with digital telephone interview equipment and field recorders to collect interviews and other audio materials for later editing in the studio. The studio is used regularly for preparing assignments and producing afternoon news bulletins on 4DDB-FM Radio on the Darling Downs.

Television studio

The USQ television studio offers a mixture of digital and video facilities that are used in the production of weekly television newscasts. Broadcast journalism and media production students work together to shoot, edit and produce the 20-minute UTV News program. Journalism students have the opportunity to take on new roles in the TV newsroom each week - executive producer, producer, assignment editor, reporter, newsreader, sports producer or sports reporter. Their media counterparts operate the field and studio cameras, as well as take on the roles of floor director, audio, director, assistant director, switcher and video-tape operator. The deadlines are tight, the program is recorded live and the pressure is real!

Print facilities

In addition to the USQ Newsroom, print journalism students have regular access to the iMac Lab and its print facilities. The lab comes equipped with QuarkExpress and PageMaker software which students use to design and produce print publications.The production team uses the latest technology, including scanners and digital photography to produce the news pages.

After hours access

Students have access to the newsroom after-hours for conducting research and completing assignments. Normal after hours access times during semester are 6.00pm - 9.30pm daily for weekdays, and 9.00am - 5.30pm daily for weekends or public holidays. The after hours access authorisation form is available from reception on level 2 of Q Block and must be signed by the course examiner.
