I have been involved with USQ as a student and now an employee in a number of roles both general and academic.  I can apply what I have learned to my students' experience within the classroom.  I have seen Indigenous education evolve with the  review of the content and believe the education journey of our students is a positive one.  Image of Rhonda Hagan

The rewards gained by imparting knowledge and impacting students in my classes in the critical learning journey gained through Indigenous studies is, in itself, profoundly satisfying.  I am also involved in an education journey that hopefully will culminate one day in being awarded my PhD.  Within the Centre for Australian Indigenous Knowledges (CAIK), as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, we are like a family who work together to gain the most benefit for staff and students.  Working at USQ provides the benefit of exposure to higher education and being able to pass on to the next generation the fact that university is an option for everyone and it doesn't matter what age, race or gender you are.  I can reassure students that they all have a role to play in addressing Indigenous disadvantage to pave the way for a brighter future for our next generation of leaders.

"I appreciate the recognition that has come my way ..." 

I joined the staff of the then Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education (DDIAE) in 1988 as Principal Lecturer and Head of the Applied Psychology Programme. Over the years, I have Image of Gerry Fogartyhad the pleasure of seeing the discipline flourish as the institution itself spread its wings and took its place as one of Australia's leading universities. I have obtained a great deal of satisfaction from my various activities at USQ and appreciate the recognition, both internal and external, that has come my way.

The University's greatest strength is its atmosphere of collegiality.  The satisfaction derived from my time at USQ owes much to the positive interactions I have had with our students and to the support I have received from my colleagues across the University.  If I had just a few words to sum up this University, I would say that USQ offers individuals the opportunity to succeed - staff and students alike.  The opportunities are there if you are motivated to take advantage of them.

"I had an opportunity to jump into a new career with promise ..." Brett Langabeer

As an officer in Defence, I led an exciting, challenging and rewarding career, but after 22 years I needed a change. But a change without compromising on the positive aspects that I had become accustomed to in Defence. I achieved this by starting a new career with USQ; and whilst I can't jump out of Blackhawk helicopters anymore, I had the opportunity to jump into a new career with promise at USQ Fraser Coast.

I believe USQ represents an opportunity to grow and develop professionally in an organisation that places value on education and the success of the University is central to its employees' ability.  I have seen this first hand and I have personally benefited by this encouragement to develop my own skill level.  I have led and been a part of teams responsible for major change at the Fraser Coast campus and in turn developed ways to empower and increase career development opportunities for administrative staff.  I enjoy the work interaction between staff, and the genuine sense of team-spirit to succeed. I think this is important, and has motivated my aspirations to be part of this success story. A very positive aspect and clear advantage of working in this environment is the diversity of employment within the University, and the supporting networks available to staff.  My family enjoys the flexibility that I'm offered in the working environment at USQ, and in turn supports my commitment to USQ.

"My work offers something different every day ..."

As part of a team, I have been responsible for maintaining the University grounds and gardens for over five years.  I Image of Gary Christensenlove the flexibility and the work hours and enjoy working with my colleagues to enhance the University environment.  My work offers something different every day and I can include conducting tours of the University's award winning Japanese Garden as a highlight.

The variety of my work presents enjoyment and challenges such as maintaining field stations, supervising Community Services workers and participating in major rejuvenation projects such as the 40th Anniversary Community Drive Project.  When hearing the compliments of a wide range of visitors to the University and the garden I take pride and satisfaction in knowing that I contribute to our beautiful surroundings.

I was fortunate to gain employment with USQ as a graduate in 2001, only expecting to stay long enough to fund an overseas adventure year!  However, the opportunities and experiences offered were too good to give up and I find myself looking back on a lengthy career (for a product of Generation Y, eight years is a long time!) which has enabled me to progress through a variety of positions to my current senior role responsible for coordinating organisational development at USQ.

I have never been bored because the University provides numerous opportunities for those willing to accept the challenges offered.   I am passionate about assisting others to reach their career potential through a range of staff development, coaching and mentoring programs.  The University has provided me with enough flexibility to balance personal interests with career progression and I have been able to take a number of overseas trips to satisfy my other passion which is to travel. These opportunities, together with great colleagues, will see me staying at USQ for some time to come.
