Mentoring program for new supervisors and managers
In 2009, Human Resources is launching a brand new mentoring program for all USQ managers and supervisors, both academic and general. The program is particularly targeted at new employees with supervisory responsibilities – either managers new to USQ or an existing staff member new to managing people. Existing supervisors are also welcome to apply. The objective of this program is to assist supervisors with people management advice and/or getting to know the USQ landscape
What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a relationship which gives people the opportunity to share their professional and personal skills and experiences, and to grow and develop in the process. Typically, it is a one-to-one relationship between a more experienced and a less experienced employee. It is based upon encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect and a willingness to learn and share.
What are the benefits?
- increased skills and knowledge
- regular and constructive feedback
- gaining greater insight into USQ
- access to role models on an individual basis
- development of confidence and enhanced self-esteem
- receiving encouragement and assistance in career planning
- increased personal and professional networks
- access to opportunities that will contribute to personal and professional development
- development of greater job satisfaction and commitment to the organisation and/or role.
How does the program work?
The Mentoring Program will run over a 6 month period. Applicants are required to complete the attached application form, which will be given to Human Resources who will then match mentors and mentees.
An orientation will be conducted in June once mentors and mentees have been matched. The session will provide an overview of the structure of the program, the roles and responsibilities of mentors/mentees and allows for networking. The session also gives the matched pairs the chance to meet face to face and determine a schedule to suit for further communication and meetings.
A mid program meeting will be held to allow participants to ‘check in', share ideas and provide feedback regarding the program. Finally, at the end of the year a final event will be held to conclude the formal mentoring program, allow participants to share experiences and give feedback about the program for future planning.
Will mentoring take a lot of time?
The program is very flexible and can be designed to suit your needs. The frequency, duration and nature of the contacts between mentors and mentees should be arranged by the mentoring colleagues themselves according to their own time requirements. Some participants prefer to meet informally every two weeks; other very successful mentor arrangements have been conducted almost entirely through email and telephone.

Call for applications - mentors
Do you remember when you were new to USQ? or first became a manager? Did you have someone to offer some friendly advice and show you the ropes? Calling all potential mentors! As the program's success is dependant on the quality of our mentors, current experienced managers and supervisors are encouraged to consider putting their name forward as a potential mentor. This is also an excellent opportunity to contribute in a positive way to the culture of USQ and to develop leadership skills.
