Grammar and Writing
This section deals with the basic building blocks of writing in English: spelling and punctuation, as well as grammar and sentence structure. These are vital elements of writing in general, but particularly of academic writing because one of the main objectives of academic writing is to convince your reader of your arguments. Writing without spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes allows you to engage your reader in your thinking, without being distracted by incorrect sentences.
This section includes an opportunity to test yourself in the form of short interactive exercises, called Just grammar and me, which includes short modules on grammar and sentence structure (Module 1), punctuation (Module 2), and spelling and vocabulary (Module 3). Use the left hand navigation menu to access the modules.
Communication for Academic Purposes (CAP) is a 50 hour online course for students who are uncertain about commencing university study, and contains modules about grammar and writing. It is recommended if English is your second language. USQConnect login and password are required to access this course, but it is accessible to all USQ students.
