Strategic decision making for leaders workshop

Overview

The following series of Strategic Decision Making Workshops is designed to stimulate existing and emerging leaders to think about the full contextual parameters surrounding a problem or issue, before moving into solution mode.

Participants will be introduced to a range of tools from different disciplines, allowing participants to engage with these tools and determine the best fit for their way of thinking and working.

The below workshops may be taken individually or as a suite of workshops.

Workshop outline and start dates

Before you attempt to design an intervention or solution, first you will need to understand the broader environment and the problem context in which this problem is situated. This workshop will introduce participants to both contexts and allow the practice of specific tools to unpack and understand the contextual parameters at hand.

The broader environment tools will include benchmarking, environmental scanning, rapid reconnaissance and Porter’s five forces. The problem context tools will include:

  • SWOT analysis
  • stop, start, continue change
  • charette brainstorming; and
  • open space technology.

Available workshop dates

  • Wednesday, 28 February 2024
  • Tuesday, 26 March 2024
  • Monday, 29 April 2024
  • Thursday, 30 May 2024

It is critical to make decisions about interventions or solutions to a problem objectively. This can be challenging in the workplace when staff may have a long association with a business activity or program and feel a strong attachment. This is where the decision making context and intervention context tools will allow more objective decision making to come into play.

The decision making context tools will include bringing the background into the foreground, desk review and decision tree. The intervention context tools will include program design, program logic, business plan and business case.

  • Wednesday, 27 March 2024
  • Tuesday, 30 April 2024
  • Friday, 31 May 2024

Data collection tools are instruments or methods used to gather information systematically for research, evaluation, or analysis purposes. The choice of data collection tools depends on the nature of the research questions, the type of data needed, and the characteristics of the target population.

The data collection tools will include:

  • interviews
  • focus groups
  • document and content analysis
  • observation techniques
  • surveys; and
  • data synthesis.

Available workshop dates

  • Wednesday, 13 March 2024

As the Australian Government requires more transparency and accountability in the expenditure of government funding, this requirement is directly felt by government entities and non-profit organisations who are accountable for monitoring and reporting said government funding. One way to respond to this requirement is to build capacity for strategic use of data within your workforce. Building capacity for the strategic use of data involves developing the knowledge, skills, and organisational culture necessary to effectively collect, analyse, and leverage data for decision making and problem-solving.

The strategic use of data tools will include:

  • data custodians
  • data sovereignty
  • descriptive statistics
  • data visualisation
  • data audit; and
  • data dictionary.
