In honour of the University of Southern Queensland’s 50/25 anniversary, the USQ Alumni Relations Office has created a commemorative coffee table book to help celebrate what makes this university great – its graduates.
'University of Southern Queensland: 50 Years 50 Stories' allows readers to discover the history, achievements and milestones of USQ’s 50 years of tertiary education through 50 stories that showcase some of the University’s best and brightest alumni. Our past accomplishments and future ambition
In 2017 USQ is celebrating its 50th Anniversary as an educational institution and 25th as a university. As part of the anniversary celebrations a University Timeline has been developed to provide a summary of the University’s development over its 50 year history through highlighting institutional key events, milestones and achievements. In addition, the timeline has acknowledged that ‘our heritage is a platform for our success’ and has identified ‘major projects moving us forward’.
1960DDUEA Formation Formation of the Darling Downs University Establishment Association (DDUEA)
1967Queensland Institute of Technology Darling Downs The Queensland Institute of Technology Darling Downs (QITDD) opened for business with 18 staff and 140 students.
1970First graduation ceremony The first graduation ceremony was held for 25 students.
1971Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education The Queensland Institute of Technology Darling Downs becomes the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education (DDIAE).
1975First postgraduate offering Graduate Diploma in Teaching is the first postgraduate degree to be offered.
1978External Studies Department External Studies Department established.
1979Research centres established Research centres established in areas including water and soil, science and human performance.
1985Off-shore external offerings Off-shore external offering of Business Studies commences in Hong Kong.
1990University College of Southern Queensland The Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education becomes the University College of Southern Queensland (UCSQ).
1991Kumbari/Ngurpai Lag Higher Education Centre Kumbari/Ngurpai Lag Higher Education Centre established as an autonomous unit.
1992University of Southern Queensland The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is established.
1997USQ Wide Bay campus USQ Wide Bay campus (later USQ Fraser Coast) and City Precinct developed in collaboration with the Hervey Bay Council.
2000University of the Year Good Universities Guide "University of the Year" for 2000-2001 awarded to USQ for leadership in developing the e-University.
2006USQ Springfield campus USQ Springfield campus opens, heralding the start of USQ's "Western Corridor strategy".
2007Queensland College of Wine and Tourism Queensland College of Wine and Tourism (QCWT) established at Stanthorpe.
2013USQ launches new Research Plan USQ launches new Research Plan and significantly increases investment in research.
2015USQ Ipswich campus USQ acquires Ipswich campus from University of Queensland, greatly enhancing our presence in the Western Corridor.
2016Agriculture, Engineering and Technology Precinct Announcement to establish the $10 million Agriculture, Engineering and Technology Precinct at USQ Toowoomba.
