Word grammar
Verbs patterns
- Some verbs (V) (called transitive) take a direct object (DO):
The star player kicked (V) the ball (DO) into the goal.
- When used in the passive voice, the old direct object becomes the subject:
The ball (subject) was kicked (V) into the goal by the star player.
- However, some (called intransitive) do not take a direct object and cannot be used in the passive voice.
Fairies exist (V) in fantasy stories.
