Apostrophes and quotation marks

Apostrophes [ ' ] are used to:

  • indicate that letters have been left out of words
  • show possession. Note: In academic writing: always its, never it is.

Quotation marks [ " ] are used to:

  • mark out idiomatic expressions
  • indicate direct speech
  • quote the words of others.

Use single quotation marks and double quotation marks for quotes within quotes.
