Phrases and clauses
What is a phrase?
- You use phrases to build clauses and sentences.
- Phrases represent parts of a sentence (for example: a noun, a verb or an adverb) but they do not include a finite verb.
- They do not convey complete ideas.
- Phrases often begin with a preposition (e.g.: at, in, through, for, over, of, with):
The man in the blue suit is a teacher.
- Especially important phrases are noun phrases and verb phrases.
