Complex and compound-complex sentences
Writing complex sentences that contain a noun clause
- They begin with that, if, or a wh- word (what, when, why, who, whom, whose, where, how, which).
- When they function as a subject, the verb of the independent clause must be in the singular.
- They are commonly used after reporting verbs.
- They follow expressions like: ‘the effect / the reason / the idea that…’.
