Academic language


Make sure you avoid:

  • colloquialisms, clichés and jargon
  • abbreviations, e.g., that is, not i.e., unless material is in parentheses (e.g., like this)
  • contractions
  • it’s. It’s is the contracted form of it is. There is no apostrophe in the possessive form (its)
  • texting language, e.g., BTW.
