Projects and planning

Facilities Management is responsible for overseeing a variety of projects across all of USQ's campuses, from minor refurbishments to erecting new buildings, campus master planning to formulating long-term strategic goals. Not all of our projects are shown for more details please contact the Associate Director (Planning, Projects and Space).

Key projects

Springfield Library Refurbishment

A new library space has been constructed at Springfield campus. The library will include a 24 hour access computer lab, more quiet study space than previously available, areas to sit and relax, and a kitchen area for all to use. A new entry off John Nugent Way and enhanced outdoor spaces will complement the facility and help link it to the rest of the campus. 

Agricultural Science and Engineering Precinct, new Laboratories

Construction has recently been completed on new laboratory and office space at Toowoomba campus, south of Baker Street. This $16M facility focuses on agricultural research and provides new glasshouses, PC2 level laboratories, quarantine areas, soils and seed storage areas and controlled growth environments.

The project adaptively re-uses several existing buildings for office and administrative areas and provides new, state of the art, buildings to house laboratory space. Along with the recently completed bird netting to the field trial plots adjacent, this project will deliver USQ researchers the ability to take their research from the laboratory, to glasshouse, to field all within the ASE precinct. 

Mt Kent Observatory

The Mt Kent Observatory is Queensland’s only professional research observatory and serves as an off-campus teaching laboratory and research facility.

The new facility accommodates the MINERVA-Australis telescope array, providing ground-based observations supporting NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. USQ researchers will play a critical role in learning more about the planets that will be found by the mission, with TESS set to discover tens of thousands of new exoplanets around nearby bright stars over the coming decade.

The multi-telescope facility at Mt Kent brings together a number of partners in the search for new worlds among the stars, including the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Mt Kent currently plays a key role in the Shared Skies Partnership between USQ and the University of Louisville.

The new facility complements a four-telescope array which searches the northern-hemisphere, located in Arizona, USA.

Sustainable Energy Solution Project

With an increasing demand for electricity to support operational activity the University is taking positive action to offset its energy requirements by installing a Sustainable Energy Solution. The solar solution delivers not only a measurable reduction in short and long-term energy related costs for the university but also provides a significant platform for research, learning and teaching.

Building B USQ Springfield

In August 2015 USQ Chancellor John Dornbusch was joined by Senator for Queensland Jo Lindgren to officially open the $45 million, Six Green Star, Building B at USQ Springfield campus, which represents a major milestone in a remarkable journey of growth for USQ and south-east Queensland’s Western Corridor.  The state-of-the-art building was supported by $41.9 million from the Australian Government and was awarded a six-star rating by the Green Building Council of Australia, offering an impressive new hub of innovative teaching and learning at the campus.The 9000-square metre, four-storey building provides a focal point for teaching and research activities as well as leading edge facilities for offerings in film, television and radio, and digital production and performance.

New building features:

  • a Six-Star Green-Star rated building design that maximises the provision of fresh air and natural light
  • a central learning commons and hub
  • collaborative and configurable learning spaces
  • specialist teaching spaces
  • individual and group study areas
  • staff accommodation
