In an Australian first, Pat is offering an intensive, hands-on, seven day songwriting workshop as part of the University of Southern Queensland’s (USQ) McGregor Music Retreat in Toowoomba this week.
As the author of best-selling songwriting book Writing Better Lyrics, as well as three other renowned books on the subject, Pat’s tools and methods have helped thousands of musicians the world over and have inadvertently given music lovers hundreds of hit tunes to sing along to.
Pat’s songwriting workshop this week is one of nine music classes, including drums, guitar, singing and more. This will be this first time that Pat has taught a workshop of this length outside of the Berklee College of Music, USA, and will be unlike anything Australian songwriters have seen.
When asked why his method and books have gone so far Pat humbly credited his students.
“Well here’s the thing, I’ve been teaching at Berklee College of Music for a long time and the students there are really, really good,” he explained.
“…and every class I walk into I’ll see at least five songs I’ve never seen or heard before and my job is to do something to make those songs better, and so I’m always having to get better.”
Three-time Grammy winner Gillian Welch credits Pat Pattison with her success.
“I would not be the writer I am today without his teaching and his unique and comprehensive understanding of language, rhyme, rhythm, and structure,” she said.
While David Wilcox and John Mayer have described him as a great teacher who takes the mystery out of songwriting without taking out the heart.
Pat is just one of the talented musicians and singers who are teaching students and lovers of music this week at the USQ McGregor Music Retreat.
