Breaking ground with Queensland’s only surveying degree

USQ is breaking new ground and offering aspiring surveyors the chance to make an impact in one of the most rapidly developing industries.
There is currently a critical shortage of qualified surveyors in Australia caused by new enterprise and expansion.

USQ is Queensland’s only provider of surveying degrees and has the largest number of surveying students in Australia with over 600 student surveyors in 2018 – its largest cohort to date.

USQ is offering three surveying programs; an Associate Degree of Spatial Science (Surveying), a Bachelor of Spatial Science Technology (Surveying)and a Bachelor of Spatial Science (Honours) (Surveying).

USQ Head of School (Civil Engineering and Surveying) Professor Kevin McDougall said anyone pursuing a career in the surveying industry would place themselves in an ideal position to secure an excellent job that pays well and can take you all over the world.

“It’s a great time to be part of the industry and USQ is excited by the opportunity to offer our programs to students not only in Queensland - but all over Australia and the world, if they’re studying online – and teach and prepare the next generation of surveyors,” he said.

“Qualified surveyors provide a vital service for the civil construction, mining and gas and property development industries, and play a key role in the planning and construction of all major infrastructure projects.

“Most of our students get into the profession because they don’t want to be stuck in the office all day, but they still want the intellectual stimulation that comes with being part of a diverse and rewarding career.”

Fourth year honours student Joshua Egan is one of the many students starting back at university later this month (February 25).

“I am looking forward to finishing my degree and working full-time,” he said.

“By studying surveying at USQ, my future is clearly visible and accessible after the completion of my course – I’ve already gained employment at a local surveying company in Burpengary.

“Surveyors are involved in so many different industries in so many different ways, and there are a lot of opportunities for great careers and travel for those that want them.”
