One person's trash is another person's treasure

A new environmental initiative at USQ is great news for the local community, particularly school students with disabilities.

USQ has joined forces with sustainable waste management service Cleanaway to take part in the Containers for Change program – turning recycle refunds into helpful funds for Clifford Park Special School.

Queenslanders use about 3 billion beverage containers annually, and the container refund scheme encourages recycling via a 10 cent refund payment.

Distinctive yellow bins have been distributed across the Toowoomba campus, including the residential colleges.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie said the University was proud to participate in the worthy endeavour.

“We have an important role to play in supporting sustainable development through economic, social and environmental benefits,” she said.

“This represents a great opportunity to build on the extensive work USQ is doing in the area of responsible waste management and resource recovery.

“Containers for Change further proves that environmental and community responsibilities go hand-in-hand, and USQ is excited to be involved.”

Cleanaway Toowoomba Operations Manager Russell Morrison said the initiative was a positive proposal for all involved.

“This not only helps USQ manage its environmental impact but also provides funds and training for students of the Clifford Park Special School,” he said.

Clifford Park Special School Principal Corina Searchfield said it was a great opportunity for students to engage and connect with the community, as well as do their part to help the environment.
