Citizen of the world to graduate

University study has taken Nash Mesquita-Mendes across the world.

Since graduating from Downlands College and starting at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in 2015, Mr Mesquita-Mendes has interned in Singapore and launched his own international company.

He will graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) and Bachelor of Information Technology (with Distinction) at USQ Toowoomba on Friday (September 13).

Mr Mesquita-Mendes received a prestigious national scholarship from Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan program in 2018, enabling him to work with multinational company PwC’s Growth Markets Centre.

The New Colombo Plan experience gave him a taste for international relations, linking with like-minded young people to form the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership (AASYP).

“Our aim is to develop the people-to-people links between the youth of ASEAN and Australia, so that we are better able to come together to solve regional issues,” Mr Mesquita-Mendes.

“Our current focus is a Young Leaders Forum to be held in Jakarta in November/December.”

In addition to taking an active role in driving change on an international level, Mr Mesquita-Mendes will put his commerce and IT prowess to good use when he commences a graduate position in Strategy Consulting at PwC Australia based in Sydney next year.

He said USQ had given him a wealth of experience and opportunity.

“In the process of completing my degree, I’ve been able to do so many different things and get involved in projects I’m passionate about,” Mr Mesquita-Mendes said.

“The flexibility I had with USQ to complete a year abroad in Singapore was invaluable.

“University, and the doors it has opened, has been a great experience in learning to be open to new things and being curious about everything.

“Through course content and class discussions, ideas and long-held assumptions can be questioned, reshaping and reformulating the way we think about the world.”
