This study is designed to research the role that teacher aides play in supporting the development of an inclusive culture within general education classes. Using a descriptive, sequential, mixed method approach data will be collected from approximately 200 teacher aides and their supervising teachers working in both state primary and secondary schools in regional Queensland. Questionnaires will be used to gather information about teacher aides’ roles and their capabilities. Data from these questionnaires will be analysed and used as the basis for a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with a cohort of participating teacher aides. Emerging themes will be used to identify the existing challenges for teacher aides and to promote changes to policies and practices that meet these challenges.
