Recent employment with a mandate to redesign the curriculum for a maritime English course at Kobe University has provided me with the opportunity to use a Design-based Research (DBR) approach to investigate the implementation of a Project Based Learning (PBL) activity aimed at improving student engagement and student learning. The PBL activity requires the students to create digital artefacts for inclusion in English Central language learning library and later use by first year students. This creation of an authentic product for a real audience is intended to provide a worthwhile and challenging project, which increases engagement and results in deeper learning for the students. The success of the intervention will be assessed by measuring the students engagement during the task.
