This project performs an examination of preternatural phenomena in early modern drama. It seeks to offer a contextual study of the representation of the preternatural in the plays of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries as a means of better defining a set of ideas that has largely been ignored, misunderstood, or too easily conflated with what is more readily recognized as 'supernatural' phenomena. This project will determine to what extent examining instances of this phenomena in early modern drama can help us better understand and define the pre-modern preternatural and conversely, how this re-definition will help us better comprehend Renaissance drama.
