Stability Assessment of Transmission Power System with Elevated Penetration of Grid Following and Grid Forming Inverters.
During power system low demand conditions, low cost renewable inverter connected generators may have adequate capacity to supply all the power system load. However, inverter connected renewable generation is connected via grid following inverters which cannot power the grid on their own as they require synchronous generators to provide them with a voltage and frequency reference signal. It is likely that transmission grid operators will follow the lead of microgrid operators and introduce grid forming inverters to enable operating transmission power grids with inverter connected generation only. This research work will investigate feasibilty of powering transmission power grids by a combination of grid forming and grid following inverters from a stability perspective.
