Building upon literature in the intersecting fields of the scholarship of engagement, student leadership development and transformative learning theory, this research focuses on the development of ‘citizen scholars’, who upon graduation are capable of leading positive change in an increasingly complex world. A particular leadership education program, the National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF) will be studied, with transformative learning theory, processes and outcomes being critically assessed. A mixed methods retrospective case study will be completed using an explanatory design. Data will be gathered from a validated survey (+-200 participants) and a semi-structured interview (+-20 participants). The significance of this study relates to the development of practical guidelines and policy considerations for student leadership development programs in Australasian higher education institutions.
