Almost 20% of the officers in the Queensland Police Service (QPS) are at the rank of Sergeant. This rank is a middle management role, often considered to be the ‘buffer’ or conduit between frontline officers and executive management (Paoline 2003, p. 206). With such a significant proportion of the service occupying this rank, the actions and behaviours of this group play an important role in achieving the strategic outcomes of the service. This research will focus on how the behaviours of sergeants in the QPS are influencing subordinate officers, particularly in regard to organisational commitment. It will also investigate whether sergeants are cognisant of their impact on employee commitment, and how prepared they are to be a positive influence.
