This research aims to understand how reading education is enacted within home learning environments and to what extent these choices are influenced by parental beliefs about reading. An explanatory sequential mixed methods approach will be utilised by quantitatively surveying 100 home educators, drawn from Australian-wide home education networks. Subsequently, a purposive sample of five semi-structured interviews will be conducted. The mixed methods approach will help form a generalisable understanding of how Australian home educators teach their children to read, while also allowing in-depth qualitative understandings of why parents make these choices.
