At West Moreton Hospital Health Service people with advanced cancer within the gastrointestinal-tract experience many symptoms related to their cancer and treatment. Poor management of these leads to negative health related quality of life indicators, resulting in negative experiences, poor treatment adherence, costly unplanned hospital presentations. These factors can negatively affect overall survival. In the home environment, symptoms and treatment side effects are complex to manage for the person with cancer, their carer and health care professional. Lack of continuous communication is a barrier to timely accurate clinical decisions and interventions. Understanding current needs of these three groups will provide insights to plan and consider future models of care, including virtual opportunities for people affected by advanced cancer.
