Increasingly over time, the healthcare system has become more complex in managing increasing costs and outcomes within a defined budget. Nurses, who represent more than 56% of the Australian healthcare workforce and a similar proportion globally, learn and develop broad skills in leadership and management, but less specifically about business or the broader system. It is unclear from the research about the perception of system leaders and emerging nurse leaders as to the value of nursing business acumen, the accessibility to acquiring business acumen as a nurse, or perceived barriers for inclusion in system level activities and reform if business acumen in nursing is not considered strong. Business acumen is proposed to be essential for future nurse leaders.
