Statistics highlight that IPV is typically perpetrated by men, however the way that male victims of IPV (mvIPV) are represented in news reporting has not previously been investigated. This project will examine Australian news representations of mvIPV using Reisigl and Wodak’s Discourse-Historical Approach. The selection of online news articles will be drawn from prominent national newspapers from Australia over a three-year period, from 2018-2020. The investigation will be primarily aimed at understanding how mvIPV are portrayed in online news articles and discovering what common themes emerge from the analysis. The project will demonstrate that dominant themes relating to the representation of mvIPV circulate and that these inflect specific sets of characteristics that position the representation of mvIPV in particular ways.
