Theme 1: Fundamental climate science research and environmental/disaster risk reduction

The focus of this theme is based on:

  • conducting research in to key global climate drivers e.g. El Nino, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) – with BoM 
  • creating strong collaborative research programs with global centres e.g. UKMet office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), BoM Melbourne
  • conducting research linking climate and disasters globally
  • enhancing resilience for global communities.

Applying seasonal climate forecasting and innovative insurance solutions to climate risk management in the agriculture sector in SE Asia.

The project is jointly implemented by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Geneva, Switzerland; The University of Southern Queensland, (USQ) Toowoomba, Australia; International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) Hanoi, Vietnam.

The project is funded with around 7.9 million Euros by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

De-Risk’s four key focus areas:

  • Development of seasonal to multi-year climate forecasts as an incremental approach to tackling climate change
  • Development of integrated climate forecast/agricultural production models to aid decision-making (across the agribusiness value chain) in Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar. 
  • Provision of innovative (index-based) insurance systems to address the issue of ‘residual risk’ – those aspects that cannot be addressed through climate risk management.
  • Implementation of participatory approaches with farmers, agribusiness, and government agencies.
