In each science discipline, students must partake in a number of mandatory laboratories and run a number of additional recommended laboratories. In the other sciences, laboratory equipment is purchased external to the school, and experiments are readily conducted.
In Psychology, there are no off-the shelf laboratories that can be pre-purchased. At this stage teachers must develop their own laboratories when they have very little experience in conducting psychological research. Thus, one of the initiatives that USQ has undertaken is to develop both mandatory and recommended laboratories.
A series of four workshops (one for each mandatory prac has been created). Each workshop presents the thinking behind the mandatory prac, it goes through the process of creating the prac, the prac session is conducted, data is collected and analysed.
Hands on instruction in statistical analysis, use of spreadsheets for data manipulation, summaries and presentation are also incorporated.
At the end of the workshop participants will be given all the materials needed to run the workshop in their schools (save for some biological testing hardware), and materials that can be used to generate in-house assessment pieces.
