About the Workshop

Charcoal is the oldest of all drawing media. It was a key component of cave painting in prehistoric times and has been used by artists from the old masters to the present day where it is undergoing a modern resurgence. Charcoal is made from sticks of wood, burned to carbon. The various grades can be used to create a diversity of marks using blending, hatching, rubbing and lifting (erasing) and the results look striking and impressive, making it a popular medium for beginners and advanced artists.

In this workshop you will explore the range of possibilities of this versatile medium. Experiment with different subject matter including portraiture, life drawing, landscape, still life and combinations of these. Our focus we be on understanding tonal values and the excitement of using chiaroscuro techniques to depict striking light and shade.
