Adam's determination to make a difference

Adam is now taking the next step in his career after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). Now studying a Master of Public Health, Adam is pursuing his goal to complete a PhD examining how we can improve the health of school teachers.

'I knew where I wanted to end up, but I wasn’t sure how to get there. My long-term goal is to complete a PhD. Studying a Master of Public Health was the right pathway to get me there and aligned perfectly to my interests,' says Adam.

Adam is studying part-time and online, which is perfect flexibility for his work-life balance. One of Adam’s favourite things about the degree is how the course is structured through its cutting-edge integrated learning model.

'There are weekly topics, which utilise the workbook functionality through the USQ Study Desk. It includes bite-sized lectures, video content, specified readings and related scenario questions. Each of these topics and questions ties into the assessment, so it forces you to think about what you’ve learnt and how to articulate your response in a short, sharp paragraph.'

USQ’s Master of Public Health is a two-year degree and includes industry placements. The first year gives students a solid foundation of the latest information in the field of health. The second year focuses on your research area and fine tuning your knowledge and skills.

'It's gratifying to know that each piece of assessment is progressing you as a professional in the field, rather than ticking a box that says you've passed the course.'

'After your placement and at the end of your degree, you will be equipped to go into an organisation and make a difference. As a future researcher I’ll have the skills to, for example, run a six-month intervention targeting staff sick leave within a company, or examining the sleep quality of shift workers.'

Adam’s journey is only just beginning as he continues his studies with USQ and work towards his final goal of a PhD.
