The ERA assessment, which evaluates the quality of research conducted at universities around Australia, rated USQ as world standard or better in 30 areas of research.
The 18 research fields receiving the ultimate accolade of ‘well above world standard’ were Numerical and Computational Mathematics; Physical Sciences; Astronomical and Space Sciences; Chemical Sciences; Inorganic Chemistry; Macromolecular and Materials Chemistry; Environmental Science and Management; Microbiology; Agriculture, Land and Farm Management; Crop and Pasture Production; Materials Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Medical and Health Sciences; Clinical Sciences; Human Movement and Sports Science; Nutrition and Dietetics; Public Health and Health Services; and Psychology.
USQ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geraldine Mackenzie, said the outstanding results put the University on par with the best in the world and were a reflection of an unrelenting quest for research excellence and strategic investment.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate our achievements, and to recognise our research quality, relevance and impact. We are a dynamic university and have become internationally recognised for practical, world-class research that delivers solutions,” Professor Mackenzie said.
“We continue to attract the best and brightest minds to USQ and invest in state-of-the-art facilities and technology, to be well-positioned in supporting industry and driving innovation for the nation.
“Just last week we launched a $6 million expansion of our Mount Kent Observatory, which is enabling our astrophysicists and students to work with international partners, such as NASA, and play a critical role in the ongoing search for new planets. This research has contributed to the outstanding result in Astronomical and Space Sciences where we ranked ‘well above world standard’,” she said.
“Our researchers in Public Health and Health Services have spent many years investigating the benefits of people sitting less at work, with this body of research being central to USQ gaining another exceptional ranking of ‘well above world standard’.”
Professor Mackenzie said these were just a few examples of the dedicated investments USQ had made to ensure it continues producing pioneering research with global reach.
“The ERA report highlights our efforts in strengthening our key research areas, and we will continue to invest in talent and infrastructure so that we can unlock even more opportunities and further cement our international standing as a leading research institution.”
The ERA assessment is run every three years and uses a five-point rating scale ranging from ‘well above world standard’ to ‘well below world standard’.
