Young adventurer’s next big quest

Alyssa Azar has climbed the world’s highest peaks and is now facing her next big adventure.

The mountaineer has enrolled in a Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP) at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) with the goal of starting Psychology next year.

She was the youngest Australian to summit the highest mountain in the world but describes her next step as just as exciting.

“I left school after completing Year 11 to pursue a full-time climbing career which was the right decision for me at that time,” she said.

“I was able to climb some of the highest mountains around the world, including Mount Everest twice in the last three years.

“Returning from my last expedition to Everest, I decided it was time to set the goal of returning to education.”

That goal has led her to the University of Southern Queensland.

She has enrolled in USQ’s Tertiary Preparation Program, the perfect base camp for those who have not completed Year 12 or have been away from studying for some time.

“USQ is a reputable university and after looking into the programs available I knew I wanted to go there,” she said.

“After finding out more information about TPP I was certain it was the right fit - given the flexibility and options USQ provides.

“I am studying to advance my career and add to my education. Starting with the TPP I am aiming to go into a psychology degree and that will add a lot of value to my real-world experiences.”

USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie said the beauty of the bridging course to university study was that it was a flexible program offering a pathway to a world of different courses.

“I have had the pleasure of following Alyssa’s adventures and welcome her to the University where I am sure she will also excel.

“Everyone has a different pathway to university study for some it is straight from high school, for others it could be a change in work, or family, and for others like Alyssa they have a mountain to climb first,” Professor Mackenzie said.
